Our experience

Tomari Nuclear Power Plant owned by Hokkaido Electric Power Company Inc.

The ATMEA Company is a joint venture between two global leaders in nuclear reactor design: EDF Group and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Our expertise and technical know-how are built on our parent companies’ more than 40 years of cumulative experience gained from the design and construction of about 130 nuclear power plants around the world.

Global experts in nuclear reactor design

Based in Paris, France, EDF Group is the world's largest nuclear electricity producer, offering customers reliable carbon-free solutions and access to cleaner, safer and less costly energy worldwide. MHI, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a leading global engineering and heavy machinery company with extensive experience in nuclear systems, including design, construction, and fuel cycle and post-operational services.

Partners committed to next-generation technology

In 2006, former AREVA (currently Framatome) and MHI realized the need for a medium-power pressurized water reactor (PWR) that complies with all international safety requirements. With an extensive history of collaboration in R&D, component supply and MOX fuels, they launched an initial design phase for the development of a third-generation nuclear island. As a result, the ATMEA joint venture was officially launched in November 2007 and is headquartered in Paris.

Turnkey nuclear island solutions

The ATMEA1 reactor is built on EDF Group and MHI’s extensive nuclear reactor knowledge. Following several years of design development, the ATMEA1 reactor is ready to order. This medium-power reactor provides a credible solution for projects in emerging nuclear economies or locations in which a medium-power solution is more suitable.
